How is the attenuation of hearing protection measured?
How strongly a product filters a source of noise is always stated on the packaging of the hearing protection. The so-called insulation value or damping is measured in decibels (db). Each hearing protection usually has a total value db SNR and a value for high, medium and low. The following values as an example: Damping value: 26 dB SNR High: 36dB Mid: 35dB Low: 15dB SNR is an English. Abbreviation and means "signal noise ratio". Translated means the signal-to-noise ratio, ie the ratio of a signal (eg., Language) and a noise. In the case of hearing protection products, of course, this would generally be a source of noise (eg loud music, lawnmowers). The higher the SNR value, the more the noise source is filtered. Decibels (db), on the other hand, indicates the noise level in a simplified way, ie how loud a noise is. Specifically, in the above example, this means that the total noise is reduced by 26 db, with high frequencies around 36 db, mid frequencies around 35 db and low frequencies around 15 db reduced. Why is there a distinction between high, mid and low? These values show you which frequencies are reduced mainly by hearing protection. This means that if you want to filter a noise source with lots of high pitched and bright noise, you have to go to a high HIGH Pay attention. For example, a circular saw produces a very high and shrill noise. Ear protection must therefore filter high frequencies more strongly, the high Value should be higher. The product in the example above would filter high and medium frequencies more strongly, but low frequencies less. In a disco, for example, if you hear the loud and thumping bass as unpleasant, then you would have to go for hearing protection with a higher one low Search for value.
What is ear muffs?
Earmuffs sit on the ears and surrounds them completely. There are only limited noises to the ears. By surrounding the ear almost all frequencies are attenuated equally. Ear muffs and hearing protection generally can never filter 100% of all sounds. How much the hearing protection filters the frequencies is shown on the respective pack and is given in decibels (db). Earmuffs are held by a headband on the head and sits with a certain pressure on the ears. Slipping of the hearing protection is therefore hardly possible, falling out due to the design excluded. Earmuffs are therefore suitable for active work or activities. Therefore, ear muffs are especially recommended for children. Children are impulsive and active. In a high-noise environment, dropping out an earplug would be inconvenient, since then the noise could hit the ear unfiltered. Also, the use of ear plugs is unfavorable in children, as they get the insertion into the ear canal itself only bad and a protection in case of incorrect handling is no longer guaranteed. Ear muffs, on the other hand, are easy to put on even by children and are much safer by design.
What are ear plugs?
Ear plugs are small plastic plugs that are inserted into the ear canal and close it. Noise can penetrate the auditory canal only to a limited degree. Unlike ear muffs, earplugs are easier to carry and can even be put in the pocket. However, ear plugs are not quite as powerful as ear muffs and are more suitable for short-term use and less powerful sources of noise. But even here there are significant differences from product to product. Good ear plugs can also filter stronger noise. Information on this can be found on the manufacturer's box in decibels (db).
What are earplugs with filters?
Ear plugs are small plastic plugs that are inserted into the ear canal and close it. Noise can penetrate the auditory canal only to a limited degree. Unlike ear muffs, ear plugs are easier to carry and can even be put in the pocket. However, ear plugs are not quite as powerful as ear muffs and are more suitable for short-term use and less powerful sources of noise. But even here there are significant differences from product to product. Good ear plugs can also filter stronger noise. Information on this can be found on the manufacturer's box in decibels (db). Really good earplugs even have integrated filters. These filters improve the performance of the product and distinguish harmful sounds from "good" sounds. For example, there are earplugs with filters that filter harmful noises but leave speech well in the ear to ensure communication in the workplace. Filters are also used for events and music. Hearing protection without filters completely attenuates the music in all frequencies. With filters, however, only the unpleasant frequencies are filtered, but the enjoyment of music itself is only slightly affected. The music continues to sound punchy and good. Nothing is in the way of the party ...
What is silicone hearing protection?
Silicone ear protection is basically not a plug. These are silicone pieces that are not inserted directly into the ear canal. The pieces of silicone are pressed into the pinna and the ear canal. The silicone closes the ear canal and forms into the auricle. Basically, all frequencies are equally attenuated. The effect of this hearing protection is impressive. Since the ear canal is almost completely closed, the effect is clear. Noise can be greatly attenuated. The handling of the hearing protection is very simple. However, the silicone pieces are not as quickly inserted and removed as ear plugs. So if you want to use your hearing protection more often during an activity and take it out again, then you should rather fall back on stoppers. Silicone ear protection is suitable for longer activities with prolonged use of the hearing protection. Due to the adhesive effect in the ear, the silicone can not fall out so easily. As a practical example sleep should be mentioned. If you want to sleep through the night in peace and without disturbing noises, silicone products are ideal. They hold firmly in the ear, dampen noise optimally and disturbing not while lying down. The adhesive effect keeps the silicone in the ear for many hours. Depending on the manufacturer, the silicone is available in different colors (transparent, pink, blue, green and many more). But it does not always have to be noise. For example, many people easily get earache due to wind. The silicone closes the ear canal tightly and wind can no longer penetrate, whereby pain can be prevented (walking in strong wind, cycling, walking on the sea, sailing). In this context, we would also like to point out our hearing protection made of wax.
What is wax hearing protection?
Hearing protection made of wax is basically not a plug. It is, similar to silicone hearing protection, wax pieces that are not inserted directly into the ear canal. The wax pieces are pressed into the pinna and the ear canal. The wax closes the ear canal and forms into the auricle. Basically, all frequencies are equally attenuated. The effect of this hearing protection is impressive. Since the ear canal is almost completely closed, the effect is clear. Noise can be greatly attenuated. The handling of the hearing protection is very simple. However, the wax pieces are not as quickly inserted and removed as ear plugs. So if you want to use your ear protection more often during an activity and take it out again, then you should rather fall back on ear plugs or earmuffs. Wax hearing protection is suitable for longer activities with longer use. The adhesive effect in the ear also prevents the wax from falling out so easily. As a practical example sleep should be mentioned. Want to sleep at night in peace and without disturbing noises, wax products are optimal. They hold firmly in the ear, dampen noise optimally and disturbing not while lying down. The adhesive effect ensures that the wax holds in the ear for many hours. The wax is available depending on the manufacturer in different colors (but mostly skin colors). But it does not always have to be noise. For example, many people easily get earache due to wind. The silicone closes the ear canal tightly and wind can no longer penetrate, whereby pain can be prevented (walking in strong wind, cycling, walking on the sea, sailing). In this context, we would also like to point out our silicone hearing protection.
What is ear protection?
Ear muffs are plastic ear plugs that are held by a stirrup. The plugs can sit in or on the ear canal. The bracket provides a slight contact pressure for a better grip in the ear. The settling is easily possible and therefore with changing activity a great solution. The ear protection can easily be worn around the neck thanks to the bracket and is therefore always within reach. In addition, the bracket is usually reusable and the ear plugs can be replaced and disposed of individually. The plugs are available as accessories in the online shop. Thus, the product is very environmentally friendly, because not all the hearing protection must be disposed of, but only the plug. Further details and basic explanations of earplugs can be found in this FAQ.
Can I clean ear protection?
Earplugs and silicone and wax products may or may not be cleaned. Just silicone and wax have a sticky structure which causes them to stick very well in the auricle. However, earwax and impurities, which we all have in our ears, also adhere to the material. For hygienic reasons you should not reuse these products often. We recommend ear plugs and products made of silicone and wax always use only 1x in the ear and then dispose of it in the household waste. Ear muffs, on the other hand, can be easily and simply cleaned. For this you use special cleaner for earmuffs. This has an antibacterial effect and gently cleanses the material. If you do not have a special cleaner on hand, just use clear water with some normal soap. But if you want to hear our opinion, then use special hearing protection cleaner. This is specially tailored to the needs of the material. You should not use any chemical cleaners, as they can attack the material and may not be tolerated by the skin.
How often can I reuse hearing protection?
Ear plugs and products made of silicone and wax cannot or should not be cleaned. Silicone and wax in particular have a sticky structure, which means that they adhere very well to the auricle. However, ear wax and impurities that we all have in our ears also adhere to the material. For reasons of hygiene, these products should therefore not be reused often. We recommend ear plugs and products made of silicone and wax only to be used once in the ear and then disposed of with household waste. Earmuffs, on the other hand, can be cleaned easily and simply. You can find more information on this in the article "How can I clean hearing protection".
Why are babies not allowed to use normal hearing protection?
Babies absolutely need a very special ear protection. You must be aware that normal hearing protection can be dangerous for babies. Ear plugs are usually too big and not useful for the little ears of children. The ear canal is still too small, tight and sensitive. In addition, the ear plugs could accidentally fall out and the baby or toddler could swallow the plug. The latter could even be life-threatening. Normal earmuffs are also not suitable. Products for adults are usually too big for the small head, but also products for children are not optimal. Earmuffs usually sit with a certain "pressure" on the ears to prevent slipping or falling down when moving. This pressure can be dangerous for babies and toddlers. Especially in babies, the skull bone has not completely closed. This area on the baby's head is called Fontanelle. Since the skull is still very soft in this area, the pressure exerted by the hearing protection pressure on the head can be harmful. Therefore, in babies only earmuffs should be used with low contact pressure. Even better are products that are individually glued to the ears. A contact pressure is in fact not available here.
Are all hearing protection products tested?
Also in the field of hearing protection there are many different products. Many products look similar or maybe even the same. Optically, they may differ only in small details or the color. But there are differences that you do not see at first glance. Because the true values are in the product. The inner values are important. The materials used, as well as the structure of the product decide on the performance and the insulation value. However, since you can not look into the product, you need objective criteria for quality. All products that you can find in our shop are tested and certified. In this context, you will find 3 characters: "CE" sign With the CE mark the manufacturer declares that the product complies with the legal requirements. The CE marking is intended to ensure technically safe products for consumers in the EU. "EN" sign EN is the abbreviation for European Norm. This is a standardized standard for testing products. The testing of a product is the sole responsibility of a so-called "notified body". This body (a company, a testing institute or engineering office) must first check a product for a standard. If it has passed this test, the product will be provided with the EN No. of the applicable standard. In the case of hearing protection products, it is often an EN 352 test. Example: EN 352-1: 2002 means European Norm 352-1, year of testing: 2002  "ANSI" sign ANSI stands for "American National Standards Institute" and is a US body for standardization of industrial practices (Seat: Washington, DC) The ANSI test is not mandatory for Europe. In Europe, only the test according to EN applies. A product with ANSI and EN marks has been tested both in the US and in the EU.
Can I exchange hearing protection?
Hearing protection is subject to the same exchange deadlines as any other product bought online. There is a slight difference, however. Earplugs and products made of silicone or wax can only be returned in their original packaging and unused. As these are hygiene products, they cannot be exchanged after use. After use, the product may be contaminated with germs, bacteria or wax and therefore unusable. We ask for your understanding. Ear muffs, on the other hand, can be exchanged as normal within the specified deadlines.
Hearing protection is too tight, what can I do?
In rare cases, it may happen that our children's ear protection is perceived as very tight and the pressure on the head as too strong. The ear defenders must be so tight in some situations that they will not slip off the ears. Imagine, your child is standing next to you while building a house and you are currently working with the jackhammer or the circular saw. If the ear protection now slips off the ears, then a secure protection is no longer guaranteed. However, if children now use the hearing protection in schools, for example, then the risk of hearing damage is quite low. This is more about "quiet work". In order to widen the earmuffs and to reduce the pressure on the head, there is a little trick: stuff the original packaging with some paper and put the earmuffs around the packaging. Keep the ear protection 1-2 days tense. After the 2 days, the contact pressure has decreased a bit and the ear protection is not so tight on the ears. If you have no packaging, then just use a wooden post, metal posts, a stair railing or something with which you can expand the ear protection. Please note, however, that you do this at your own risk. You should then the hearing protection can not be use more in noisy surroundings. This trick is intended only for school, kindergarten or quiet environment. However, if your child generally feels that hearing protection is unpleasant, do not force him to wear it. Children should have fun with our products. In case of doubt, you can simply use your return policy. You can send the item back to us until 30 days.
