What is autimism?

Autism is a mostly congenital developmental disorder. However, autism can also result from brain damage at a later point in time. But in all cases it is an incurable personality disorder.

The information processing in the brain of affected children or adults is massively disrupted. Autistic people often behave completely differently. However, you can often not see this disease at first glance. Autism shows almost exclusively in behavior and a so-called "island talent". Often compulsions or abilities arise, so-called stereotypical behaviors. Autistic people often also have impressive strengths with regard to their island talent, although there are clear differences in their characteristics. Many autistic people tend to have an extreme form of order and, for example, compulsively sort objects in the same order. Other forms of autism show strengths in memory, for example in solving arithmetic problems or in learning words or sequences of numbers of any kind. There are also forms of autism in which people withdraw completely, hardly communicate or always only one and the other perform the same action. However, all of the properties mentioned can also occur in combination.

What does autimism do?

Autistic children or adults are often inhibited in their social behavior. You have difficulties with close personal relationships, which often leads to irritation in communication. This can lead to conflicts, especially in the parent / child relationship, as the parents feel that they are unloved or find it difficult to convey their affection. Autistic children find it difficult, if not impossible, to show their affection. People who have little experience with autism often find it ignorant, cold, or dismissive. The difficulties in social behavior also cause problems in communicating with others. Lack of eye contact, clearly looking away, feeling uncomfortable in the presence of strangers and difficulty concentrating are clear signs. Due to a lack of awareness, autistic people find it difficult or even impossible to adjust to a conversation partner. A lack of empathy probably best describes this fact. Problems in social interaction are therefore the main difficulty for people with autism.

What behaviors are typical of autimism?

Autistic children often withdraw because of their lack of social skills, like to be alone or even completely isolate themselves from other people. Trying to get them out of this state of mind can upset them and bring them out of balance. Even panic attacks and aggression can arise when the environment or situation changes. Dealing with strangers is often noticeably unpleasant for autistic people. External stimuli such as noise, hectic pace or stress can completely disrupt their concept. Even everyday situations can be sufficient (changes in the environment, sudden noises or bright light). Situations that are completely normal and everyday for other people can already bring autistic people into a state of emergency.
